July 2025: A Part of the Veil Nebula in Cygnus, Encompassing Pickering's Triangle and NGC 6995

Messier 29, an Open Cluster in Cygnus
A Part of the Veil Nebula: Pickering's Triangle and NGC 6995
The Veil Nebula in Cygnus is a vast supernova remnant - a patchy spherical shell still expanding in space thousands of years after a star blew up in a giant explosion. This is just one part of it. There's a bit of nebula called Pickering's Triangle, and another bit called NGC6995 - I can't figure out the breakdown of place names at all. The veil is classified with a handful of catalogue numbers; it wasn't always recognized as a single, enormous entity.

Taking away the stars digitally makes the open space in the image blotchy, but it does bring out the details of the nebula. The red in the picture is ionized hydrogen (H-alpha) radiation; the blue shades and some purple come from ionized oxygen and nitrogen.

Last year I imaged the part of the nebula called "The Western Veil" ( https://larysz.com/Images/2024/July%20-%20NGC6960/index.php ). There's still plenty to go.
